Shifting Power

In service to the protection and rehabilitation of thriving natural ecosystems as well as community connection, autonomy and resilience.

We are committed to truth-telling, justice and equity in all of our work by prioritizing those who have been harmed by the colonial economy and systemically denied leadership roles in contemporary society.

Conservation and Connection

Access to meaningful time in outdoor natural places fosters learning, compassion and connection for all people. Indigenous leadership is essential for effective nature-based antidotes to climate change, while language and land-based education foster cultural revitalization and strengthen communities. We are honoured to be in service to Coastal Foodways, Indigenous Leadership Initiative and Nawalakw and Human Nature Counselling, among many others.

Towards a Caring Economy

For societal change, we are in service to independent and non-profit journalism, as well as asset distribution led by people who have been denied economic power, and the exploration of post-capitalist economic relationships that acknowledge historic harms and systemic dysfunction. We admire the Right Relations Collaborative and The Circle on Philanthropy for demonstrating how philanthropy can nurture reparations, and we are proud to be co-founders of the Just Economy Institute Canada.

Diversity in STEM

Elevating voices that have been underrepresented in the technology and engineering fields is essential to address environmental challenges and improve the health of individuals and communities. By fostering diverse perspectives and inclusive approaches, we can address equity issues in the field and develop more effective solutions that benefit everyone. Working closely with the University of Victoria, this will be a key area of research and investment for us in 2026.

Spotlight

The Just Economy Institute (JEI) connects, educates and supports financial innovators, social entrepreneurs and other changemakers who are shifting the flow of capital and power to solve complex social and environmental problems.

JEI offers a nine-month fellowship designed to support leaders who are highly insightful, collaborative, and committed to building community wealth and collective well-being. The program combines deep reflection, systems thinking, and practical learning, alongside an intentional community of peers.

The Canadian fellowship will blend JEI’s curriculum with Canadian advisors, speakers and case studies. JEI will begin receiving applications for its inaugural cohort of 20 to 24 Fellows in August 2026, and the program will begin in the spring of 2027. Approximately 60–70% of Fellows will come from Canada, and 30–40% of Fellows will come from outside of Canada.

The Heart of Our Work

Authentic

We show up with humanity and honesty. We choose belief over apprehension and trust over bureaucracy, acknowledging that the current environmental and social outlooks are daunting. We invest with love, placing the health of communities and natural life systems above fiscal returns. We listen deeply, centre others' experiences, and shift power toward the leaders best positioned to create change. Our personalities shine through, and our agreements reflect the spirit of the relationships behind them. Our legacy will be seen in happier people and healthier oceans, air, and land, for generations to come.

Flexible

As a small, caring team within a family office, our structure exists to serve the work, not slow it down. We make decisions with joy and do our best to adapt to the needs of those we partner with, rather than having them adapt to us. We don't create unnecessary work, require excessive meetings, or burden those we serve with onerous applications and reporting. No jargon, no performative formality, no surprises. We believe in the high-capacity leaders and organizations we serve — those with deep roots in community  — to know what they need.

Contact Us

Before you reach out, we'd like to share with you where we're at right now. Our direct giving budget is committed through to the end of 2028. During this time, we're reflecting on our past work and exploring ways to shift economic and decision-making power to the communities who deserve it. As a new organization still building our processes, we want to do this well rather than quickly. During this time, we may be slow to reply and we will not be able to reply to all inquiries.

The Team

    Jess Lake

    Co-CEO - Vision and Values

I've been at times an artist-entrepreneur, community organizer, and environmental bureaucrat. Ten years ago, I founded The All One Fund to focus fully on our family's philanthropy. This has now grown into HLCC in order to add investing and other purpose-driven ways of moving capital to our relationship-based grantmaking. I'm so grateful to have a wonderful team who understand that I get my best work done while on a hike or hanging out in the goat barn.

    Megan Parrish

    Co-CEO - Investments and Operations

I've spent the past six years leading the Lake Family Office, where I've managed diverse community-driven projects that have organically led to HLCC. As a CPA with a political science and business degree from the University of Victoria, I bring financial expertise honed through roles as a CFO and analyst—and my days are equally shaped by life on our hobby farm with three energetic kids, a passion for functional fitness, tending to my garden, and losing myself in a great boo

    Lauri Thompson

    Executive Director of Philanthropy

I have a long and meaningful history at the intersection of charitable work and philanthropy. At this stage of my career, I can think of no better way to contribute than advancing HLCC's mission of power-shifting in philanthropy, ensuring decision-making authority rests with the people who know their communities best. When I'm not working, I'm playing Pickleball, or exploring these beautiful WSÁNEĆ territories with my favorite pup.

    Morgan Barnes

    Administrative Assistant

My role with HLCC couldn’t be a better fit. I’m most fulfilled when I’m supporting others, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be supporting the wonderful people who strengthen our communities. Outside the office, I love making art, doing puzzles and grounding myself in nature.
